The Global Climate Strike, an international event which aims to take a stand against the climate crisis, has begun.

Thousands of people across the world have taken the day off from school and work to highlight the detrimental impact climate change is having on the world.

Just last year, Greta Thunberg drew the world’s eye to her protests that were aiming to raise awareness of the risks posed by climate change as well as holding politicians accountable for their inactivity during the climate crisis.

“World leaders are going to be gathered here in New York City for the United Nations Climate Action Summit,” Thunberg spoke in one of the strikes in NYC. “The eyes of the world will be on them,” she continued, “they have a chance to prove that they too are united behind the science. They have a chance to take leadership, to prove they actually hear us. Do you think they here us?” the 16-year-old activist addressed the crowd. People followed her words with cheer as Thumberg declared “We will make them hear us”.

Protesters have demonstrated their ingenuity with a range of creative, eye-catching and bold signs.

For those still questioning whether they should do something about the climate crisis or not, the global initiative has this message:

“Our house is on fire. The climate crisis is an emergency but we’re not acting like it. People everywhere are at risk if we let oil, coal and gas companies continue to pour more fuel on the fire. Our hotter planet is already hurting millions of people.”
