The first Tattoo artist in Britain was in the 1880s in the Victorian era. His name is Sutherland Macdonald. He was exposed to the Polynesian style of tattooing when he was on a tour with the British army in the trip to the South Pacific with James Cook. After he was introduced to the art of tattooing he instantly was interested and he brought the art back to his country. By the year of 1889, he was working in his own tattoo parlor in Britain. He had to open up a separate section of professionalism in the Yellow pages when he registered his shop. He remained the only listed tattoo artist under that section for 4 years. That shows that Macdonald was clearly the first tattoo artist in Britain.
He patented his electric machine, leaving his manual methods in the year of 1894. He has been a very influencing character in the early tattooing trends in Britain. Macdonald has reportedly tattooed many Princes of Kings and Queens at that time. He has made very powerful friends along his line of work.
